In ISM last week, the majority of the time was spent on calling professionals and finding interviews in hopes of getting a mentor which is due this week. After many calls, I was finally able to get two professionals to have interviews with. The first interview is with Ph.D. Karen Falla, a neuropsychologist who owns her own practice in Mckinney. The second interview is with Dr. Cassie Rushing, a professor of Behavioral Psychology who also owns her own private practice. Being able to find these interviews with these highly qualified people was satisfying, especially after losing a lot of hope from the weeks before; achieving the goal of finding more interviews was definitely accomplished in this sense. Some time was also dedicated to researching more about my Original Work. Although the physical product has not been started, almost all of the research is done in order to begin building the play therapy dollhouse. Therefore, the goal of furthering research for the Original Work was also met.
The work ethic last week was definitely improved; having deadlines set gave me a healthy amount of pressure and motivation to further work on the Original Work as well as the search for a mentor. After going on the interviews this week, hopefully, one of them will agree to a mentorship and the deadline for a mentor will be met as well. Some goals for this week are to finish publishing the digital portfolio for the Original Work/semester conferences. Also to begin planning the display board which is due on Friday, this will require a detailed plan of how to chunk the work I have due in ISM this week to avoid rushing.

Last week in ISM, the final revisions of the Original Work Proposal were due as well as the start of research presentations. Originally, the topic planned for the original work was going to be a survey to study the psychological effects of technology and social media on children, however, due to its lack of originality, it was changed. The new original work planned is a dollhouse which will be used as a form of play therapy for children who suffer from mental disorders. This product is far more unique and original, therefore it will have a larger impact on society as a whole while meeting the requirements of the original work as well. Completely changing the topic of the original work took quite some time to come up with, but it is relieving to know that now I will be doing a topic that not only meets all of the original work requirements but will strengthen my knowledge on this year's topic as well. Last week, planning for the first research presentation began too. Having to compile all of the knowledge learned this year was certainly a challenge because of how different all of the assessments done were. Pediatrics is an extensive field with so much variety that putting all that research into one powerpoint was a challenge.
Last week was definitely less stressful than many weeks, nevertheless, still having to keep due dates in mind and chunking work was important. Finally getting an interview scheduled for today last week was a goal accomplished and all the other goals of chunking and work ethic from the previous week were accomplished because I was able to get all assignments done on time and with quality. The goal for this upcoming week is to finalize the research presentation for Wednesday. This will require some practice regarding hand gestures, eye contact, and overall speaking skills throughout the presentation. Some goals for the first presentation is to stay calm and not be nervous because it will show when presenting, hopefully with the practice that will be done, a good, high quality presentation can be delivered. Last week in ISM, heavy preparations for the Business Symposium began as well as beginning the much dreaded “Cold Calls.” Preparing for the Business Symposium was very exciting as it is the first real exposure to the professional world. Making sure the resume, professional suit, and materials were all matching in color theme and style was an important aspect of preparing for this; as well as making final touches to the resume to make it as informative as possible. One of the last research assessments was completed last week as well, the focus of this research assessment was on the psychiatric aspects of Pediatric Nursing. Researching about how different mental disorders can impact the development of a child as well as the reasoning behind it was very interesting, therefore, it is a subspecialty to take into consideration as a career option as well.
This week was a good week of reflection and thinking for the topic proposal next week. After researching Psychiatric Pediatric Nursing, it has become a huge area of interest that I desire to further explore. On the other hand, an area that needs special attention is cold calling; noticing it has been put off is a huge area of concern, therefore, this week, scheduling interviews and calling will be the main focus. Furthermore, on top of beginning to diligently work on cold calling, the topic proposal is due this week as well. Being able to deeply reflect on a specific topic that can bring promising end results is very important for this week and more time needs to be alotted in and out of class to work on brainstorming a specific topic. The past week in ISM, the process of practicing cold calling and coming up with interview questions began. It was slightly challenging practicing cold calling for the first time; it was difficult to not just read off the script while practicing and speak in a monotone voice. With the feedback of peers, an area that was called to attention is the tone of voice used while calling, it should be less monotone, and also slowed down when speaking. Keeping these corrections in mind will hopefully be beneficial for when we start calling for interviews. The resume rough draft and Assessment 3 was also due last week on Friday. Making the resume was a huge learning experience because it was the first step into the professional world and learning how to sell oneself to other professionals; choosing correct and proper word choice and making sure to include relevant information was something to keep in mind. Finally, in Assessment 3, the subfield of Pediatrics, Neonatal Nursing, was researched. It was very beneficial researching about this field because many childhood complications seen in Pediatrics, can sometimes originate in events that occur in the child's Neonatal stage.
Last weeks organization and quality of work was greatly improved; following the schedule made last week definitely helped allocate more time for each assignment to improve it. Additionally, motivation and inspiration to begin calling professionals helped significantly as the process of brainstorming interview questions and cold call practicing began. Some goals for next week looking at the calendar, are to create the website and digital portfolio. Organization and keeping a calendar up to date will be extremely helpful this week due to all the different assignments of this week. Throughout my first week of ISM, although we have not started researching, I definitely brainstormed some ideas and goals for my topic this year. Picking a quote that best suits my topic and goals for this year was the first task. While it was difficult to find one that really defined my mission this year, once I stumbled across it, I knew it was the one that adequately fit my purpose.
Writing my mission statement for this year was a bit more challenging, it took some digging and insightful thinking to properly put all my thoughts and goals into concise sentences. While writing my mission statement, I was able to reflect on the mission that nurses have in the medical field and include those objectives into my mission statement. Overall, my work ethic this week was very good. I am motivated and enthusiastic to start researching and learning more about pediatric nursing. I also made sure I started my assignments early and put full thought and effort into them. My goals for this coming week are to begin research on my topic and start the first assessment of the year. I plan to start working in class and hopefully finish it by Thursday to manage time efficiently. |
